Upgrades Coming To Sugar Sand Park

A little dust now will lead to an improved, safer Sugar Sand Park for decades to come.

And other than that dust, park users likely won't even notice a disruption.

In May construction crews began the process of replacing the community center's roof.

Currently, the 27,000 square foot facility sports a metal roof over part of the building and tile over the remainder of the venue.

The nearly 30-year old roof needed spot repairs in recent years to curb leaks. District commissioners elected to be proactive by replacing the entire roof. The new roof will be all metal, and is expected to last for 50 years.

“We're going to solve this issue now before it turns into a bigger problem,” Commissioner Bob Rollins said. “It's the responsible action to take.”

The metal roof is being installed in a manner to easily accommodate the installation of solar panels, should commissioners desire to do so in future years.

Construction crews will work on the west side of the building first, replacing the roof over the Willow Theatre and the Maple Room.

The upgrade won't affect community center programming. The building will remain open for camps and other programming, and all Willow Theater shows will proceed as planned.

Visitors who only use the park's athletic fields won't even notice the construction.

Commissioners also began the process that will eventually lead to roof replacements at Sugar Sand's Field House, the family pavilion and ball field buildings. A timeline has yet to be established for those projects.

Along with ensuring the park's indoors remain dry, crews are helping make Sugar Sand Park safer by installing security cameras around the parking lots.

The District recently completed installing security cameras around buildings at Sugar Sand and the Boca Raton Swim & Racquet Center.

“We take pride in ensuring that District parks like Sugar Sand are some of the safest places in Boca Raton,” Commissioner Craig Ehrnst said.
